But what exactly does the fertilizer do??? It does speed up the crop and it seems as though nothing more happens when you harvest??

I have been using fertilizers on crops as well as on trees. For both, you will get a larger harvest, instead of just 2 apples per harvest, u will get 4 (I really haven't counted exactly, but it works this way). Crops also will yield a bigger harvest count. Another bonus is the prized crops that you will randomly get when u harvest your crops. You may be able to harvest an extra large tomato fpr example and my personal record was a 20lb one! This prized crop will give you extra coins and XP! However, this does not apply to the trees though. After applying fertilizers your crops will look much bigger and all will be glittering...a pleasure to look at!!
